Internship Experience

These are examples of my work from different internship and professional experiences I’ve had while in my undergraduate years at the University of Cincinnati. I have been given permission to post these documents onto my portfolio.

Distribution marketing and communication internship

with Ohio National Financial Services | Cincinnati, Ohio

In April of 2020 (right after quarantine where I lost two different job offers) I was scrambling to find an internship for the summer. I was so lucky to have received an offer from the Career Agency Distribution Team at Ohio National Financial Services (ONFS). They were so generous to have offered an online internship experience rather than canceling their program all together; and I am so grateful! Below are some of the examples of work I did while working from home during the summer of 2020. I got to experience a new work environment, my own house, which was perfect before my senior year of college!

CAREER AGENT 401K FAQ SHEET

This project expanded over the course of the summer. I was at first just sent an email with the information that was needed to be displayed, and I went from there! This was the first time that I worked with an entire team, each with different jobs that come together to work on different pieces of a project. I wrote the copy, and after I uploaded it to WorkFront, our project management system, someone from the design team got involved. Obviously, as you can see from my first attempt, it’s good that the design team got involved when they did! They used the curved lines on the document, which is part of the ONFS branding; the curved lines are representative of the O. This document is still being worked on because right as I left, the company changed retirement policies!

Social Media Writing

During my interview and on my first day, my boss asked what I wanted to do in the future and what I hoped to get out of this experience. I told her my love for writing and expressed that writing and editing was the goal. She remembered this all summer and reached out to the Corporate Communications team, who gave me the opportunity to do some social media writing for them. I was given three articles directing folks to the website, and was given the task of writing a post that would encourage browsers to click on said link. I gave it my best shot and wrote out quite a few for the CorpComm team to choose from. They re-worded some of my ideas to fit the ONFS brand and voice, and my copy was posted to the ONFS Facebook page!

Combining Knowledge Across Jobs!

Because of my work in the Career Studio at UC (and my younger perspective), the distribution team asked for my help in updating their social media tips for Insurance Agents. The main areas we updated on their Agent-oriented website were Facebook and LinkedIn. I was really excited to help update this section of the website, as honestly it was uploaded in 2012 and hadn’t been changed since! This document on the left is what I came up with after reviewing what was on the site already. I came up with the ways to improve and the page was updated almost immediately!

Pacesetter Emails: Top producing Insurance Agents

The company’s top selling insurance agents are in the elite ONFS Pacesetter group, and to stay there, agents must be in the top 50 of all selling agents in the company’s wide umbrella. With ONFS serving all states except New York, this is a great accomplishment. Over the summer I was in charge of sending out the monthly email to the Pacesetter group. This email was created through SalesForce Marketing Cloud; one of the tools I learned this summer. I worked with my manager to create the copy for the actual email, and then I went in and filled out the spreadsheets with each agent and their sales numbers. Then, I was able to see the analytics from the email in the days after sending it. It was interesting to see email marketing done in this fashion, as usually I’m on the receiving end of a marketing email. I very much enjoyed working with this tool and seeing the email come to fruition.

Peer career coach

Bearcat Promise Career Studio, University of Cincinnati

I have been employed with the University as a Peer Career Coach since August of 2019. I very much enjoy my work; I do so much more than just assisting students with professional documents. My manager does an excellent job of making sure that not only are we helping students, but we are all gaining experience in fields in which we are excited about!

Social Media Posts

I was chosen as the designated social media manager in the Career Studio. This is the first post I made for fall semester 2020, and it was posted to the Department of Experience-Based Learning and Career Education (ELCE) Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages. I wanted to create an engaging but informational post, and I thought this was the perfect way to do just that!

Interview Cheat Sheet

In the spring 2020 semester, I worked very closely with a good friend and coworker of mine to create this sheet that we can distribute to students asking and preparing for interviews. This sheet has a worksheet on the back of it so students can print it off and fill in the answers to all of the questions. This was a fulfilling project for me, as I was able to be involved from the beginning helping write some of the copy, and then I was able to take over and create a visually pleasing document. It’s great to see so many students using this document both in our office on campus and from our online version on the website.

Career Fair First Look For First-Year Students

The “First Look” event was for first year students to get a chance to see what the (massive) career fair at UC is really like to increase attendance. I toured students around the career fair and helped show that no, it’s really not that scary! I made this document to accompany our tour. My boss gave me an idea of what she would like it to say, and then I took it and ran with it. I wrote the copy as well as designed the sheet. It went through multiple stages of editing, but was finished within a week and used to assist first-year students at the career fair.

SOcial media and Marketing intern

Devil’s Lake Yacht Club | Manitou Beach, Michigan

Summer 2019 I was hired as the first-ever social media and marketing intern at Devils Lake Yacht Club in the Irish Hills region of southern Michigan. Not only did I have a great and beneficial experience, I could not complain about the view from my office everyday! Below are some samples of the work I did at Devils Lake Yacht Club (DLYC).

Social Media

As the designated social media intern at DLYC, I was responsible for updating and creating different forms of social media. The Club has a Facebook page, so in order to show the board and the managers my ideas, I created a mock-up on Canva to showcase the new and improved Facebook Public Page.

Club Ambassador Program

The Board of Governors at DLYC was looking to improve member retention. As a way for members to feel more welcome, the DLYC Ambassador program was formed. With 20 members who had been long-time good standing members, I created a ‘cheat-sheet’ for Ambassadors to help newer members with any questions they may have, as well as some talking points. I designed and printed documents, folders, and business cards for all 20 ambassadors.

New Member Nights

Another new member initiative taken was to create a New Member Welcome Night for new members to come start their weekend meeting each other and club ambassadors. This was a flyer I made on Canva to drum up some interest in our new event.

Publicity

DLYC had undergone a $1.6 million renovation the prior winter, and was looking to show off their new space. In order to reach a wider audience, rather than just those in their community, I created this ad to put in different local publications in the southeast Michigan and Irish Hills regions. The ad includes pictures from the grand opening party, the club colors of blue and white, and some details about the club features. I wrote the copy with guidance from a previous year’s ad, but I added a more modern look with the pictures and addition of the information at the bottom. It was really amazing to see something I had designed and written to be published, even if it did not have my name on it!

Monthly Membership Reports

Each month, the Board 0f governors asked for a dashboard report detailing the membership changes. I was completely unfamiliar with dashboard reports or any way to create them. After doing my own research, I created this packet for the June Board meeting, which was my first board meeting of the season. Each month thereafter was formatted similarly as I used this document as a template, but the membership numbers kept going up!

Calendar

As the intern, I was often times assigned other clerical duties; whether it be making name-tags for an event, printing copies, or creating a monthly event calendar, I was able to experience a wide variety of different office work. This calendar template I created for the monthly events was something I felt creative with, and really was able to let the true spirit of summer shine through in my work.
